The first thing that comes to mind as soon as you hear or read the name of Amjad Khan, is that he played his classical character Gabbar Singh in Sholay. This one character made him very popular.

Ajmad Khan was born on 12 November 1940 in Peshawar (now Pakistan). He is known more as the villain of the screen. But he also performed character roles and immortalized the characters with his brilliant acting.

The story of Amjad Khan getting Gabbar's role is interesting. Actually, this role was first offered to Denny. But he could not do it because of his earlier commitments. After this, when the name of Amjad Khan was considered, the writer of the film Javed Akhtar was not persuaded. He did not like Amjad's voice. Somehow later he agreed. The dialogues of the film in Amjad Khan's heavy voice played an important role in making the film popular.

Amitabh himself had revealed that when he read the script of Sholay, he told the director that he wanted to play Gabbar. But Ramesh Sippy chose him to play Jai.

Amitabh Bachchan knew Amjad Khan very closely. Amitabh told how Amjad was so fond of tea that you cannot count how many cups of tea he used to drink during the shoot. One of his tea and another was his joke, these two things had a special place in his life.

Amjad Khan was very fond of Ghazals and Urdu poetry. He often used to decorate ghazals on the roof of the bungalow in his Bandra. There were also a lot of discussion in the offscreen chemistry of Amjad Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. The two were extremely close to each other and the pair were also seen on shooting sets. Amitabh had told in an interview that Amjad used to call him Shorty as a joke. Amitabh told that when he and Amjad Khan walked together on the sets, people used to call him Shorty (Amitabh) and Broad (Amjad).

Amjad Khan died at the age of 51 from a heart attack. But a major accident happened due to this heart attack. Actually, when Amjad was going from Mumbai Goa-highway to shoot for the film The Great Gambler, then his car accident happened on the way.



This accident was so terrible that he went into a coma. After some time, he came out of coma but after this accident his weight started increasing and finally in 1992 he died due to heart failure.
